Overview

Keratoconus Management for Stable, Clear Vision

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder in which the normally round cornea becomes thin and bulges into a cone-like shape. This irregular shape causes distorted and blurred vision, increased light sensitivity, and frequent changes in glasses prescription. The exact cause is not fully known, but genetics, eye rubbing, and allergies are common risk factors.

At Aloka Eye Clinic, we specialize in early detection and customized treatment to slow or stop disease progression. Using advanced diagnostic imaging, our ophthalmologists determine the stage and recommend the most effective solution—from collagen cross-linking to corneal implants or specialized contact lenses. Early intervention is crucial to preserving vision and preventing the need for corneal transplantation. With modern, minimally invasive procedures and comprehensive care, we help patients maintain clearer, more stable vision and long-term eye health.

Keratoconus Symptoms

Keratoconus often begins in adolescence or early adulthood and progresses gradually. Early symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, sensitivity to light, and frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions. Patients may also notice ghost images or double vision in one eye, especially when looking at lights at night.

As the cornea becomes thinner and more cone-shaped, vision may worsen significantly, leading to increased astigmatism, halos, glare, and difficulty with night driving. In advanced stages, the cornea may develop swelling or scarring, causing sudden drops in vision.

How is it Diagnosed

  1. Eye Examination
Your doctor examines the cornea to check for thinning, bulging, or irregular shape—early indicators of Keratoconus.
  2. Corneal Topography
This imaging test maps the shape and curvature of the cornea, making it the most important tool for diagnosing and tracking Keratoconus.
  3. Pachymetry & Other Measurements
Pachymetry measures corneal thickness, while additional tests help assess severity and monitor changes over time.

Treatments Options

  • Eyeglasses & Soft Lenses (Early Stages)
In mild cases, vision can be corrected with updated glasses or soft contact lenses to improve clarity and compensate for early irregularities.
  • Special Contact Lenses
Rigid gas permeable (RGP), scleral, or hybrid lenses are commonly used to create a smooth optical surface, providing clearer vision for moderate Keratoconus.
  • Corneal Cross-Linking & Surgical Options
Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) can halt or slow progression. In advanced cases, treatments such as intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) or corneal transplantation may be required.

FAQs

Can Keratoconus be cured?

It cannot be cured, but treatments like cross-linking can stop progression, and lenses or surgical options can significantly improve vision.

While not the only cause, chronic eye rubbing is strongly linked to Keratoconus and can worsen the condition.

Yes, it usually affects both eyes, though one eye may be more advanced than the other.
