Overview

Lasik for Freedom from Glasses and Clear Vision

For millions of people around the world, glasses and contact lenses are part of daily life. But what if you could wake up and see clearly without reaching for them? LASIK eye surgery has made that a reality for many. In this article, we break down what LASIK is, how it works, who qualifies, and what to expect before and after the procedure.

What Is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is an advanced laser procedure that reshapes the cornea- the clear front part of the eye- to improve how light is focused on the retina. This correction can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK is commonly used to treat:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism

Benefits of LASIK

  • Quickprocedure & fast recovery
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Long-lasting vision correction
  • Highsuccess rates
  • Reduceddependence on glasses/contact lenses

Many patients return to work within 1–2 days.

What to Expect After LASIK
After the procedure, it’s normal to experience:

  • Milddryness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Slight blurring for the first few hours

You’ll be given lubricating drops and protective shields to use for a few days. Vision continues improving over the next weeks, with most people reaching their best vision within 1–3 months.

How it Works

LASIK is performed using cutting-edge laser technology and typically takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes. Step-by-step:

  • Numbingdrops are applied for comfort.
  • Athin flap is created on the cornea.
  • Aprecise excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue.
  • The flap is gently repositioned- no stitches required.
  • Most people notice clearer vision within 24 hours.

Who is a Good Candidate?
You may be suitable for LASIK if:

  • You’re 18 years or older
Your prescription has been stable for at least a year
  • You have healthy eyes (no active infections, scarring, or severe dryness)
  • Your corneas are of adequate thickness
    You’re not pregnant or breastfeeding

A detailed consultation and corneal mapping help your eye doctor determine suitability

  1. Eye Examination
Your doctor examines the cornea to check for thinning, bulging, or irregular shape—early indicators of Keratoconus.
  2. Corneal Topography
This imaging test maps the shape and curvature of the cornea, making it the most important tool for diagnosing and tracking Keratoconus.
  3. Pachymetry & Other Measurements
Pachymetry measures corneal thickness, while additional tests help assess severity and monitor changes over time.

Risks & Considerations

While LASIK is safe and widely performed, patients should be aware of:

  • Temporary dry eyes
  • Glareor halos in low light (usually improves with time)
  • Undercorrection or overcorrection (rare)

Choosing an experienced surgeon and undergoing proper screening greatly reduces risks.

LASIK vs. Other Vision Correction Options
If LASIK isn’t suitable for you, alternatives like SMILE, PRK, or ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) may be recommended. Each option has its own advantages depending on corneal thickness, lifestyle, and prescription.

Is LASIK Worth It?
For many, LASIK is life-changing- offering freedom from glasses, convenience during sports or travel, and clarity from the moment they wake up. It’s a long-term investment in visual comfort and quality of life

Other Laser Refractive surgeries

1. SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
A minimally invasive procedure where a tiny incision is made to remove a lenticule from within the cornea, reshaping it without creating a flap. It offers faster healing, greater corneal stability, and reduced dry-eye symptoms.

2. Contoura Vision (Topography-Guided LASIK)
Uses detailed corneal topography maps to create a personalised ablation pattern unique to each eye. Delivers sharper, higher-quality vision by correcting even subtle corneal irregularities.

3. Femtosecond LASIK (Femto-LASIK / Blade-Free LASIK)
A femtosecond laser creates a precise corneal flap, followed by excimer laser reshaping. This increases safety, accuracy, and visual outcomes compared to older microkeratome methods.

4. PRK / Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)
The epithelium is removed and the excimer laser reshapes the surface of the cornea—ideal for patients with thin corneas or those prone to dry eyes. Healing is slower, but long-term results are excellent.

5. TransPRK / No-Touch PRK
A modern, touch-free version of PRK where the laser removes both the epithelium and reshapes the cornea in one step. It avoids flap creation entirely and is preferred for athletes or those at risk of eye trauma.

6. Wavefront-Guided LASIK
Uses wavefront aberrometry to measure tiny optical imperfections unique to each eye. This customised approach enhances night vision and reduces glare/halos compared to standard LASIK.

7. ReLEx FLEX
Similar to SMILE but uses a larger flap for lenticule removal. Offers high precision and rapid recovery, and is useful for certain corneal anatomies.
