Overview

Pterygium Removal for Healthier, Comfortable Eyes

Pterygium, often called “surfer’s eye,” is a benign, wing-shaped growth of the conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea. It is commonly caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, dust, wind, or dry environments. While small pterygia may cause minor irritation or redness, larger ones can distort vision, affect appearance, and lead to astigmatism or corneal scarring if untreated.

At Aloka Eye Clinic, our specialists evaluate the severity using slit-lamp examination and advanced imaging to determine the best course of action. Treatment ranges from medical management for mild cases to surgical removal for progressive or vision-threatening pterygia. With modern surgical techniques and tissue grafting methods, recurrence rates are significantly reduced, ensuring both aesthetic and functional recovery. Protecting your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses and avoiding irritants can also help prevent recurrence after treatment.

Pterygium Symptoms

Pterygium often begins as a small, raised, fleshy tissue on the white part of the eye, usually on the side closest to the nose. Early symptoms may include redness, irritation, dryness, or a gritty sensation, similar to having sand in the eye. Sun, wind, and dust exposure often make these symptoms worse.

As the growth enlarges, it may extend toward the cornea, leading to blurred vision, astigmatism, or a visible cosmetic change in the eye. In advanced cases, it can interfere with vision if it reaches the center of the cornea.

How is it Diagnosed

Eye Examination

A pterygium is diagnosed through a straightforward clinical eye examination, during which the doctor closely inspects the eye to assess the growth’s size, thickness, and overall extent. This evaluation helps determine whether the tissue is stable or progressing and whether it is beginning to encroach onto the cornea, which may affect vision.

Treatments Options

Medical Management- Mild symptoms are often managed with lubricating eye drops, anti-inflammatory drops, and protection from irritants. These help reduce redness and discomfort.

Protective Measures- Wearing sunglasses with UV protection, using wide-brimmed hats, and avoiding dusty or windy environments can prevent progression and ease daily symptoms.

Surgical Removal- If the pterygium grows toward the cornea, causes significant irritation, or affects vision, surgical removal may be recommended. Modern techniques reduce recurrence and provide better cosmetic results.
