Overview

Lacrimal Sac Surgeries to Restore Natural Tear Flow

Lacrimal sac surgery in Dubai is performed to treat tear drainage problems that cause excessive tearing, discharge, or recurrent eye infections. When the tear duct (nasolacrimal duct) becomes blocked, tears cannot drain properly into the nose, leading to constant watering and discomfort.

At Aloka Eye Clinic, our oculoplastic specialists perform advanced lacrimal surgeries to restore normal tear flow and relieve these symptoms.  The most common procedure, DCR surgery in Dubai (Dacryocystorhinostomy), creates a new pathway between the lacrimal sac and nasal cavity to bypass the blockage. We also offer minimally invasive endoscopic and laser-assisted approaches for faster recovery and minimal scarring. With precise evaluation, gentle techniques, and modern equipment, we ensure high success rates and lasting comfort. Early diagnosis and proper management of tear duct issues help prevent chronic infections and protect the health of the eyes.

Lacrimal Sac Symptoms

Problems with the lacrimal sac often begin with excessive tearing (epiphora), where tears overflow onto the cheeks because they cannot drain properly. Patients may also experience a feeling of fullness or pressure near the inner corner of the eye, especially when the area is gently pressed.

As the condition progresses, symptoms may include redness, swelling, pain, and discharge from the inner corner of the eye. In cases of infection (dacryocystitis), the area may become warm, tender, and filled with pus, sometimes accompanied by fever or general discomfort indicating the need for blocked tear duct treatment in Dubai.

How is it Diagnosed

  1. Clinical Examination
The ophthalmologist examines the eyelid and tear drainage area for swelling, tenderness, or discharge, especially at the inner corner of the eye.
  2. Tear Drainage Tests
Tests such as the fluorescein dye disappearance test or irrigation
(Syringing) help to determine if the tear duct is blocked and how severe the obstruction is.
  3. Imaging & Additional Studies
In some cases, imaging like dacryocystography or CT scans is used to evaluate the lacrimal sac and surrounding structures, especially in chronic or complicated cases.

Treatments Options

  • Medical Treatment- Mild infections or inflammation are treated with warm compresses and prescribed antibiotics to control pain, swelling, and bacterial infection.
  • Tear Duct Procedures- For persistent tear duct obstruction, procedures such as probing, irrigation, or balloon dilation may help open the blocked passages and improve tear drainage.
  • Surgical Management (DCR)- If the blockage is severe or recurrent, Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery may be recommended. This procedure creates a new drainage pathway between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity, effectively restoring normal tear flow.

(Endoscopic or external approach depending on the case.)

FAQs

Can a blocked lacrimal sac go away on its own?

Minor blockages may improve with warm compresses, but most persistent cases—especially those involving infection—require medical or surgical treatment.

Yes. DCR surgery is a well-established and effective procedure with high
success rates in restoring normal tear drainage. DCR is performed
endoscopically or through external approach depending on the case.
Sometimes additional stents may be placed in the lacrimal passage to
maintain the patency.

Blockage of the tear duct allows bacteria to accumulate in the lacrimal sac, leading to swelling, pain, and discharge.
